A Shopping Day in Georgetown, DC
Georgetown is my favorite way to spend a slow Saturday. There is something about the brick sidewalks, the historic storefronts, and the river light that makes shopping here feel like a real outing, not an errand. If you only have one day, here is how I would spend it.
Start on M Street
M Street is the heart of Georgetown shopping, and it earns its reputation. The historic buildings that line the street hold everything from polished fashion houses to independent boutiques, so you can wander for hours and still find something new. I like to start at one end and simply walk, letting the window displays pull me in.
Wander up Wisconsin Avenue
Where M Street meets Wisconsin Avenue, the neighborhood opens up in every direction. The blocks heading north are where I find the smaller, more personal shops, the kind of places where the person behind the counter remembers your name. This is where Georgetown feels less like a shopping district and more like a village.
The Book Hill boutiques
If you have not discovered Book Hill yet, this is the day to change that. Along upper Wisconsin Avenue, from about O Street up toward Reservoir Road, a cluster of independent boutiques, art galleries, and antique and home decor shops give the neighborhood a distinctly Parisian feel. I always save Book Hill for the afternoon, when I can take my time.
The hidden archway alcove
There is a little archway alcove tucked between the boutiques on the Book Hill side that I have come to think of as my secret pause. It is easy to walk right past. When I find it, I stop, put down my bags, and take a breath before the next block. It is a small reminder that a great shopping day is as much about the pace as the purchases.
My shopping-day formula
Wear shoes you can walk in for miles, carry a bag that leaves a hand free, and plan a proper lunch stop so you do not shop on empty. I also like to do a second pass at the end of the day, because the piece you kept circling always tells you something.
Georgetown never fails to leave me inspired, and I usually come home with something I did not know I was looking for. That is the magic of a neighborhood that has been doing this beautifully for centuries.
