DC's Newest Luxury Spa: The Salamander

DC's Newest Luxury Spa: The Salamander

When the Salamander Spa opened in late 2024, it gave DC something it did not have before: a two-level luxury spa on the Southwest waterfront. I have visited a few times since, and it has quickly earned a permanent place on my list of favorite ways to reset in the city.

A two-level spa on the Southwest waterfront

The Salamander sits inside the Salamander Washington DC hotel at 1330 Maryland Avenue SW, near the Wharf and the National Mall. The new entry opens off the hotel's redesigned Living Room, then the spa descends to its own level below. That sense of descending into a calmer world is exactly how a spa day should begin.

The treatments

There are fourteen treatment rooms, and the menu leans into advanced, non-invasive skin and beauty treatments. The MediSpa by Medcreation offers needle-free facials, which I appreciate as someone who wants results without downtime. Whether you book a facial, a massage, or a full-body ritual, the rooms feel modern, private, and unhurried.

Steam, sauna, and water therapy

The locker rooms include steam, sauna, and water-therapy experiences, so you can build your own ritual around your treatment. I like to arrive early, move slowly between the steam and the sauna, and let the warmth do its work before my appointment even begins.

The pool overlooking the Potomac

The indoor pool overlooks the Potomac, and it is the kind of view that makes you forget you are in the middle of a city. After a treatment, I order tea, sit by the water, and let the afternoon drift. It is the closest thing to a getaway without leaving DC.

Plan your visit

Book ahead, especially on weekends, and give yourself more time than you think you need. The spa rewards a slow pace, so plan to arrive early and stay late. Bring a book, leave your phone in the locker, and let the two levels do their work.

The Salamander feels like the future of DC wellness, and it is a future I am very happy to spend time in. If you have been waiting for a reason to treat yourself, this is it.
